Memories are strange things. You rarely recall bad times only the good seem to be triggered by the senses. When we look back to 70′s what do we remember? The powercuts? Three day weeks? The strikes? I don’t think so. What’s most likely the first things that spring to mind are:

escape-to-the-seventies.com70′s Toys – Pet Rocks, Crossfire, Battling Tops, Choppers, Slinky’s, Klackers, Spirographs and not forgetting the great Spacehopper.

70′s TV – Starsky and Hutch, H R Puff n stuff, Persuaders, Timeslip, Tomorrow People, Wombles, Upstairs Downstairs and of course my favourite Catweazle

70′s Music - Top of the Pops, Glam Rock, Disco and Punk , Sailor, Sweet, Wizzard and Slade.

70′s Sweets – Space Dust, Fry’s 5 centre, Spanish Gold, Galaxy Counters, Jamboree Bags, Corona drinks with the refundable deposits, Tab… the list goes on and on.

It is these memories that I hope to bring back to you with this site. Sure it has a lot of information on seventies films, sweets , 70’s memorabilia and the best seventies music library on the web, but that’s not the whole story. In these stressful days I think it is important to take some time off and relax. Play some games you loved as a child like space invaders, mousetrap, bingo or even battleships. In this hi-tech internet driven world I hope to provide you with a gateway to a world of good memories for at least a few minutes of stress free time right at your desk.

I have so many stories of growing up in the seventies for you to read through and relate to and even a genuine teenagers diary from our lovely Smurfette who was 12¾ at the time and apparently absolutely crazy about boys!!!

The one thing I have had ever since I first started this seventies project is so many of you offering to help me develop this site, from film reviews, stories, music biographies to Smurfette’s seventies Diaries. You are all so lovely and I thank you all very much for sharing your memories.

With so much here I do hope I can stimulate your mind into bringing back those good 70′s memories and maybe stretch those few minutes into an hour.

Take me back to a time when the summers were long
Take me back to the place where I felt I belonged
Take me back to the tree where I carved my girls name
Take me back to the days of toys, books and games

escape-to-the-seventies.comTake me back to my room where I dared to dream
Of winning the cup for my fave football team
Take me back to that wall with my friends I would sit
And tell the world what we thought of it

Take me back to the road and the run-outs I’d play
With my cool friends and the things they would say
Take me back to the school yard, crushes and fights
Take me back to the days of hot summer nights

Take me back to the times when christmas had cheer
With soft white snow and the Babycham deer
When Santa was real with his reindeer drawn sleigh
Let me escape from here to those wonderful days

I have always looked back to this decade with great fondness, as it was a very special time in my life. Isn’t it funny how the melody of an old tune can bring back memories from ages past. I was nine when I first heard T.Rex’s Ride a White Swan and whenever I hear it, it brings back great memories of my holiday at Camber Sands. Getting up at 4 in the morning to try and miss the traffic. Driving down there with my Uncle Stan in his Cortina, playing war with my newly found brothers and cousin in the dunes, playing on the slots down at the Southend Kursaal with with little hands bursting with old pennies and of course fishing. The summers always seem to be hotter those days and the winters more snowy. We never seemed to have any worries. We used to play run outs all day and only go home when it got dark. We used to make our own toys and go-carts and go exploring.

Things were much simpler then.
